Let’s Talk: Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure (Movie Thoughts)

Yeah I know, what is this you might ask!?…well if you didn’t already know this is Sharpay’s spin off movie, Ashley Tisdale’s character from the High School Musical franchise movies, some of you probably never heard of it and some of you maybe have, but most likely forgotten about it at the same time and that’s alright, sometimes I find myself forgetting about it too, what keeps reminding me of it is a specific song from the movie I like called New York’s Best Kept Secret, which we will talk on a little later, that is if this post doesn’t end up being very long!! If it does then we’ll just make a part two focusing on the Soundtrack and have this be the movie review of it, right now the title includes both movie thoughts and soundtrack review, but if by the end of me writing this, I feel this has been a little too long of a post, it’ll be changed to movie thoughts.

Now to get straight into it…..let’s give our thoughts on the movie itself and see how well I do with this, movie reviews aren’t really my usual thing, but I thought i’d give it a go and see how I do with it, plus there was some things in the movie that I couldn’t help, but want to share when I revisited this slight hidden gem a couple of days ago….depending on if you watched it or even liked it to call it that, I however will, because I have a soft spot for it, even though I rarely watch it, it’s a once in a blue moon kind of movie for me when I want to feel nostalgic in a way……but let’s talk about it!!

Movie Review Time

Alright so based off memory, the movie starts with a song obviously, this song being Gonna Shine and i’m not gonna lie, even writing that out makes me cringe, reason being is because I can hear the song in my head and it’s just not my tune….i’ll explain it fully later when I talk about the soundtrack as a whole, but to continue on which in a way i’m happy with, after Sharpay’s performance, we follow her backstage where her parents are raving about how well she did on stage which she loves cause she’s Sharpay….during the gathering backstage,

She gets approached by a what I believe is a casting agent for broadway, which she always dreamed of starring in telling her about a play he’s doing and all the exchanging of information that they do, now this is where we switch it up, because it was this part of the movie where I realized something very important that I didn’t notice before when I watched originally, plus a few times after of course and that everyone is the fact that JOEY JEREMIAH (played by Pat Mastroianni) from Degrassi (DJH, DH & New Generations) WAS IN THIS MOVIE…….and I just learned about it!! Joey Jeremiah was in Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure…..

HOW DID I NOT SEE IT UNTIL RECENTLY, like you’d think I would’ve gotten it before, but no, not at all!! That blew my mind, when I saw that, well that was the first of it anyway, but moving on to the rest of the movie….we go back to Sharpay where she’s pleading with her dad to let her go to New York so she can be in the play, but her dad doesn’t think that she’s ready to go to the Big Apple alone, so what does Sharpay do to convince her dad!? What only Sharpay Evans does best comes up with plan to get what she wants which is to go to New York and star in that play!!

Now in this next scene discussion, we have Sharpay and her friends thinking up a plan that will get her to New York and get her dad to agree to let her go, it was also in this scene where I discovered another fellow Degrassi face Paige Michalchuk played by Lauren Collins and where I paused the movie for a second time yelling at the tv wondering how I didn’t see that before AGAIN!! I mean both Joey Jeremiah & Paige Michalchuk appeared in this movie and I just noticed it!? I guess because I had a moment in my life where all I watched (for the most part) was Degrassi, it took me this long to notice they were in this, like if you were sat next to me and saw my reaction to seeing them in it, you’d probably look at me like I was crazy, but in that moment I didn’t care I was all I cared about was that I didn’t realize it before…..

Moving on though Sharpay and her friends come up with their plan and she later presents her whole set up to her father who still is unsure on letting her go alone, her mother sees her daughters efforts and tells her husband about a friend in New York who has a son that could keep an eye out for her while she’s there, Sharpay’s father is at first hesitant, but soon caves in and agrees to let her go to New York, on a few conditions however, she’s got one month to get herself into the starring role of the play and if by the end of the month she doesn’t, she’s gotta go back home and work for her father at his country club, which is something Sharpay doesn’t want to do so she agrees to his conditions, but only to make sure she gets in that play.

To sum up the rest of the movie, Sharpay heads to New York and makes a new friend/later love interest, she also makes a frenemie (enemy first, friend later) and then an actual enemy in disguise, her friend/later love interest Peyton (played by Austin Butler) journey’s along with Sharpay on her road of stardom, while also creating his own short film for a project that he made Sharpay the leading role of when she first arrived, pretty much recording her adventure in the big apple, while on their journey, Sharpay also learns that the starring role that she was approached with by the casting agent was not for her, but for her dog, which at first she was upset about, but she later embraced it and chose to support her dog on his opportunity, Where we welcome our second song of the movie My Boi & Me, which again we’ll talk about later.

We are then soon introduced to the frememie Roger (played by a young Bradley Steven Perry) and his dog Countess, where they perform their own rendition/version of the same song that Sharpay sang with her dog, but instead it called My Girl & Me throughout the majority of the movie Sharpay & Roger have a feud with one another trying to sabotage each others dogs chances at being the lead, while their dogs found interest in each other, seriously they had a whole scene with them going on their own adventure hanging out and falling in love, it was very weird, very cute, but weird….but before that whole scene, we meet Amber Lee who is the villain of the whole movie in disguise,

Her mission is to get rid of both dogs so only she can be the star of the play and while that’s all happening she suckers Sharpay, well yes and no to that, Sharpay kinda volunteered herself temporarily to be fair only to get close to Amber so that she’d make her dog the lead dog of the play, but back to what I was saying….Amber allows Sharpay to be her new assistant after firing her last assistant all because she didn’t get her what she wanted,

*Mind you the assistant got into an accident while on her bike, but Amber didn’t care, all she cared about was what she asked for*

Back to the review Now because Sharpay idolizes Amber, she doesn’t realize that Amber was actually just using her to get her to do extra stuff that she didn’t want to do, at least at first she doesn’t, even when she was warned by Peyton about it, but even though it takes her a while she eventually learns the true colors of Amber Lee and after feeling a little down on herself for it and getting a pep talk from Peyton, she cuts ties with Amber Lee real quick all while exposing her as well, not alone, but with a new friend, her enemy turned friend Roger and after being humiliated Amber confronts Sharpay and soon quits the play,

Causing it to be canceled thanks to Sharpay standing up to Amber…..not the greatest thing for a headlined show I know!! Soon after the show was said to be cancelled with Amber walking out, Sharpay is faced with the realization that her time in New York had come to an end and that she would have to soon pack and head home to wor…wor..work at her dad’s country club (if you don’t get that reference than i’ll tell you it’s from the movie itself anytime Sharpay thought about it she’d say it that way) while she’s packing, she talks to Peyton one last time, about how she doesn’t want to leave, he tells her not to, but she’s already accepted that she made a deal with her father and that she has to go forward with it due to her not getting the role she sought out for

She then gets a call from the theater telling her to pick up the rest of her dogs stuff from the play, the writer and director of the play in the movie tells the cast that the play is off due to not having a lead actress and that it would’ve been nice to almost work with them…..after the announcement Sharpay walks toward the steps of the stage and tells Peyton that she’ll meet him outside, Peyton not wanting Sharpay to both leave and give up, tells everyone in the theater room that he know’s someone who is great for the part and shows them part of a video he filmed of her singing in the theater when no one was there.

Revealing my favorite song of the movie New York’s Best Kept Secret, after they’ve seen her hidden performance of the song they realized that she definitely should’ve been considered for the part of the girl and they without question asked Sharpay to save the show by playing the lead and she of course agreed on one condition….

That condition being that both dogs split the role of the lead dog in the play which they agreed to, in this little moment we also get a bit of a side to Sharpay that you don’t normally get which is her admitting that she’s afraid, with Peyton responding in the words of “finally” and transition love interest is a go (I don’t have to explain what that means you all get it i’m sure) we finish the movie with one last song, called The Rest Of My Life, which is another one I like, Sharpay does what Sharpay does best and steals the show, all whilst showing everyone just how she was meant to play the part and how good she actually is and that’s the movie!!

Thoughts On Movie

Okay so now we move our focus towards what I thought about the movie after not have seen it in a good old while……so revisiting this movie, i’m not going to lie, it was a little weird at first, I hadn’t watched it in soooo long and if I hadn’t have had a song from this movie stuck in my head a few days ago I probably wouldn’t have watched it for another long while to be fair, I did have a few moments where I cringed at some parts and it wasn’t really with the movie itself, but the songs within the movie, but I feel there were some parts of the movie that made me go “Oh gosh seriously!?”

Perfect example…..the parts with the two dogs, although it was cute and I fawned over the dogs themselves, I just didn’t understand why they decided to do a whole romance day with the dogs, it was very weird, I think what gave it the ultimate cringe moment was they played Justin Bieber’s breakout song Baby in the background, mind you it wasn’t even Justin himself singing it…..but Lucas Grabeel one of the main characters of HSM sing it, which by the way I just found out about recently, crazy part is it didn’t even sound like him, but okay!?

I think if they had a different song play, it wouldn’t have been that bad, it might’ve still been a little weird, but less cringe, then again it was mid 2000’s, 2011 to be exact, but still why!? Another cringe scene to me was Roger’s (Bradley Steven Perry) performance of Me & My Boi (Girl in his version) I didn’t like it, I thought i’d feel the same way about Ashley Tisdale’s version when she first started singing it, but after her performance of I learned that I had a soft spot for her version, the way she did her was actually not as bad, but Roger’s……the only thing I liked about it was the cute dog, that’s it!!

There probably was some other scenes I didn’t quite like much, but overall even with the cringe parts, I still felt like it wasn’t that bad of a movie, I think what give the movie it’s leverage of not being completely terrible is Ashley Tisdale, to me she just plays the part of Sharpay so well even the cheesy parts come across normal at least to me, watching this movie again despite me having moments where I wondered why I was even watching it, I still watched it because I was genuinely enjoying myself, Ashley Tisdale did a great job playing Sharpay not just in the High School Musical franchise, but also in her spin off movie, she doesn’t get a lot of credit for the characters she played while on Disney and how well she played them either, which is a bit of a shame, because she really is a good actress, not only that, but she’s also a good singer, her vocals are very unique, they may not be the strongest to a lot of people, but she still holds her own with it pretty well!!

I just feel her to be a little underrated with her talents and I wish people acknowledged her a bit more, because Ashley Tisdale really is quite the talent, as sweet as Ashley is, she really knows how to play the opposite to her personality and it suits her very well, but back to the movie thoughts…..overall i’d say it was pretty solid, on scale through 1-10 i’d say it’s between a 6-7, 8 being the highest on the scale that i’d choose to give it because I did enjoy it a good amount, 6 songs and all, if I had to go between 6 or 7 though, i’d give it a solid 7, it wasn’t the best movie, but it wasn’t the worst either, I still had a good time watching it and regardless to how cheesy and cringe some of the songs are, which i’ll talk on soon, there were still some that I liked as well, but movie wise….it’s exactly how I remembered and also not how I remembered,

Which in this case is good, Ashley Tisdale & Austin Butler played their parts well, I feel like their chemistry was good, Bradley played his character well too even though he was very annoying and the actress that played Amber Lee did good too, I really didn’t like her, I mean when you’re playing a villain though it’s expected, however I still feel her character to be the worst character in the movie, like seriously awful,

but I guess that was the point I mean she played her part well!! Other complaints with the movie that became a recent bother of mine was how the movie had two dogs in it, gave them their own scene and yet their not mentioned when you look up the cast even though they were LITERALLY apart..of..the..cast!? Maybe that’s just me, but I just feel if you put a lot of time into adding a whole scene for two dogs to go on adventure/date then it’s only right they are included on the cast list, JUST SAYING!! Rant now over…..I have a soft spot for this movie, will I watch it agin!? Yeah probably, a bit later down the line unless I get a sudden urge to watch it,

but I don’t think that’ll happen, with Frozen 2 most definitely because I have been wanting to watch it again for a while now, but with this movie……I feel it’ll be a while before I decide on watching it again, still have a soft spot for it though, but that’s the review…..i’ll be doing the soundtrack of this movie next although it’ll probably be a short one cause there aren’t a lot of songs to look at, there maybe 2 songs that I briefly and I mean BRIEFLY talk about because I just don’t like them very much as for the rest of the songs……i’ll try and give my best and honest thoughts on them, stay tune for part 2….

P.S. One last complaint, why did they take out Ryan’s (Lucas Grabeel) special guest appearance in the movie at the end credits!? I was looking for it and everything when I watched it on DisneyPlus and they removed it, come on seriously!? I searched it up after to feel complete, but still, they should’ve kept it!!

Now Playing: My Window By Jake Epstein (Songs From Degrassi Season 7)

If you guys don’t already know, i’ve been pretty into the Canadian show Degrassi, it’s one of my favorite shows to watch actually, not only are the topics on that show always great and interesting to see, but believe it or not, Degrassi has some pretty great songs to it as well!!

I’m always intrigued with the way the songs come out, most of them sound very good and the people singing the songs, they make you believe that they themselves have written them, but obviously it’s not always like that, but the way they perform it will have you thinking that it’s an original song.

I always find the writing of the songs they have for the characters who are meant to be singing them to be pretty fascinating, one of my favorites is the song My Window by Jake Epstein who play Craig Manning on the show for a good few seasons, i’m not really sure what it is about the song, but it’s just really good, Jake’s vocal’s are pretty damn amazing in this song, I can’t really describe his voice, but what I can say is, it’s very unique……

The way he performs My window is just something of it’s own and when you listen to the song, the words, the lyrics to it is just……I can’t seem to get a wording on it properly at the moment, but it’s just so, let’s just to say you really feel it……but again Jake’s vocals with the songs is amazing here!!

As we all know everyone has their own voice when they sing, some are powerhouses, some more soulful and others just have their own category that they naturally add themselves in and Jake Epstein is one of those that is just in his own realm when he sings, it really is hard for me to put him some place and maybe he doesn’t need to be in a specific place, sure there are probably other artists that are pretty similar to him in other ways,

but Jake alone just has this very indescribable unique style to him that you just can’t seem to help, but admire and with way he brings you the song, even if you can’t really get an exact idea on where exactly to put him, you still feel it, sometimes you can’t quite put your finger on something, but you still have a feel to it in someway you know!? My window to me is a really great song, I was actually trying to look up the meaning of it, but I can’t seem to get it at the moment even when looking at the lyrics to it……..

Again I don’t know what it is, but there’s just something to this song as well as Jake Epstein’s performance of it that makes me want to re listen to it every time, it might take a good few listens just to really truly understand the meaning behind it and to be honest, I don’t really mind it……

Favorites: Song, Book, Tea and Channel Series (Sept 29, 2019)

Hiya, hope you all are having a good one and have been enjoying your weekend. If you ask me how i’ve been doing, well I would say fine and not another word more, let’s just get straight into this post here shall we!? Now I never shared one of these before, so I don’t know if i’m even doing it right, if there is a specific way to do it, but I also feel it’s not all that hard to figure out the more you go along.

Before we get to the titled things that I will share upon being my favorites, I just want to say that I looked at the date earlier today and I can’t believe how quick this months gone, we’re literally at the end of the month and soon, real soon, we’ll be in the spooky season that is October, how crazy is that!? I’d say very, but is it really!?

These months always tend to speed on by, before you can really settle into a month, another month is already arriving to town, Halloween town!! Ha kidding, although it is a pretty good movie!! Moving on let’s talk favorites, again i’m not really sure how this is going to turn out, I mean I know it’s just writing, but i’ve never done a post where i’m just talking about my favorite things, but let’s see where this goes.

Okay first up on the favorite list is book: Crazy Is My Superpower (How I Triumphed By Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts and Breaking The Rules) By AJ Mendez Brooks (formerly known as AJ Lee)

I adding this first because I just finished reading two chapters of a book I started reading last month, towards the end of the month to be exact. I actually started reading this on a Sunday and ironically today is Sunday.

Fun fact (sorta): originally I wanted to read this book every Sunday since that’s when I started reading it, I was only going to read 1 chapter every Sunday, but uhh, yeah that didn’t happen…..I did keep the routine going for two Sundays when I picked it up finally, i’ve had this book in between my bookshelf for a good while and when I say good while I mean, a year….

Update: I just relooked at it and it’s been in my bookcase for not 1, but 2 YEARS, YOKES!! Yeah I wrote that right, goodness that long *heavy sigh*

I actually preordered this book, but yeah that’s just a small uninteresting fact ha…..ANYWAY!! When I started reading this, it was on a day that I was feeling really…..not my best, I was just not having a good day and was feeling a lot, so I ended up picking this book off my bookshelf to give it a read and it made me feel better, while also allowing me to let my emotions out that day, it gave me an excuse to just feel without worry.

Here’s proof well sorta, these are the accessories that came with the book, but the book is also within the picture, you just can’t see it, it’s probably on the side somewhere.

I also laughed because it’s just a really good book, i’m going to be honest I have no idea how to “book review” like at all……when I first read this, I wanted to talk about it, but I didn’t really know how, so I kinda just enjoyed it in the moment instead which I didn’t mind. To give you a brief idea of what it’s about, i’m going to attempt a brief run down, because I can just ramble on and on without stopping, but this book is an Autobiography,

Written by one of my favorite people, she’s a former wrestler, now author and actress I guess you can say, she’s been in some shows and movies that I never actually watched, yet anyway, but this book is about her life, she talks about all that she’s been through, her time in the WWE and also her struggle having to deal with being bipolar and what that’s like, there’s a lot more that she writes about in her book, but i’m only in the beginning part of the it, after reading two chapters today, i’m now on Chapter 5.

I’m saving it for next weekend, don’t want to finish the book too early, although I did debate on whether to read Chapter 5 as well after getting past 3 and 4, but I was like no i’ll save it for next time. I’m really enjoying this book, whenever I read a book, I never tend to finish the whole thing, there’s been a few occasions where I have read books towards the end,

Nowadays I read a book, stop at a certain chapter, open another book and repeat….but i’m giving this book a good amount of breathing room before I actually finish it, I don’t want to finish it too quickly because i’m really enjoying it and I want to keep the suspense to what else is going to be revealed possibly, there’s a lot of emotional moments in this, but with the way AJ writes, you’ll laugh, cry and get a better understanding of everything, pretty much your emotions will be all over the place.

I don’t know how to really give a good “Here’s why you should read this book” i’ve never reviewed a book before so I don’t know if i’m selling you this well enough, i’m not actually trying to, I just wanted to express how much i’m enjoying it, AJ is one of my favorite people, I love her so much, she’s really incredible and I know she’s writing another book so when that comes out, I will be getting it, but in the meantime, i’ll just keep on reading and enjoying Crazy Is My Superpower.

AJ’s quite the busy bee right now, she’s doing a lot of things and working on different projects, I think she’s going to be in a comic book or show something like that, I know she’s in a movie named Rabid, it’s a horror film and it’s a remake of the 1977 version, she plays along side her husband Phil Brooks (formerly known as CM Punk) and an actress from one of my all time favorite TV shows, that is Instant Star, Laura Vandervoort, she played Sadie Harrison, Jude Harrison’s older sister, played by one of my all time favorite artists Alexz Johnson, such a great show that was…..but back to AJ

She’s doing great, I love her!! Something I really like about the book is the fact that you get to feel her personality coming off the pages, when you read it, you’re literally hearing her voice inside your head as your reading it and I find that to be really neat, if you know AJ and know her personality and the way she is, then you’ll know what i’m talking about, but if not then your going to be so confused to what I just said and that’s okay!!

This is a really good book, I would recommend giving it a read, you don’t have to, but if you’re curious, it’s on the invisible table in front of you, unless there is a table in front of you than imagine it there.

Moving on to next favorite on the list Song: Mad By Cassie Steele

Just want to say, this song is AMAZING!! I love it!! I ended up coming across this one about a few days ago and after hearing it for the first time, I can say i’m pretty hooked with this one, I only heard it once when I first listened to it and that one time, I kept thinking about it. I didn’t listen to it for a few days after, but it stayed within my mind, where I kept thinking, “man I really want to listen to that song again.” it’s really good and it’s now my favorite song at the moment. For those who aren’t quite familiar with Cassie

You might or may not know, but she was in a show that I was obsessed with a couple months ago, it’s simmered down now, still a favorite though, but she played Manny Santos in the show Degrassi: The Next Generation from Season 1 to Season 8, plus 3 movies within the show, she’s got a few songs out as well as albums, she hasn’t made music in a while though, but there’s always hope that she will surprise us with something good maybe who knows, but Mad is one my favorites right now, she is so underrated as a singer it’s not funny, at least that’s my thoughts anyway, but it’s so good!!

If you want to listen to it, I will leave it for you guys here: Mad By Cassie Steele (Lyric Video)

Third on the list….Tea: Yeah I know, what!? Yes Tea, I don’t think i’ll have a whole lot to say with this one, but I have this specific tea that i’ve been drinking lately and it’s quite nice actually, it’s organic too, it’s called Organic Moroccan Mint Green Tea and it’s great!!

P.S. Sorry if this is a crappy photo, I took a lot last night and this came out to be the better looking, at least I thought it did, but yeah….

Anytime i’m feeling a little nervous or I feel my stomach is a little unsteady, which is often for me, I always go for tea, preferably peppermint, because it tends to help calm my stomach down, but we ran out of that one and I had this one to try out and so yeah i’ve been drinking it a lot lately, it’s really good and I actually have some next to me, it’s cold now, very cold, I don’t drink tea all that much and I also don’t drink it very quickly, that would burn if I did that, I actually burned my tongue yesterday by accident,

that was fun, but it happens…..I only drink tea every few days, I tend to make it the most when I start feeling anxious or when my stomach acts up, now don’t kill me, but I don’t always finish it…..but I do feel bad when I don’t because I know I made it to drink it, but I somehow end up forgetting about it and it’s not until i’m heading to sleep where i’m like “ahhh I did it again” but i’ve been really enjoying the mint/green tea i’m going to have to get some more soon because i’m running out, it’s a favorite of mine though.

Last, but not least, Channel Series: Jacksepticeye’s Minecraft Videos…..

I’m going to say this now…..i’ve never in my life thought I would ever write this, i’m not really into Minecraft, I wouldn’t go playing or going out of my way to watch videos on it, but Jacksepticeye’s series on it…..is pretty alright, i’ll be honest I didn’t get into it right away, it took me a little bit to sit and watch his gameplay on it, the first time I watched it, I couldn’t really be bothered to watch the whole thing, I went out my way to skip it, but I later went “let’s just give it another go” I used it as background noise while I rested my eyes a bit in the start, but after a couple of episodes in,

I ended up actually wanting to watch it which surprised me big time because I would never watch a Minecraft video, I actually remember talking about this to my little cousin when we were talking about video games, he was obsessed with Minecraft at one point, made me watch a few videos of it, I didn’t want to, but I did because he was interested in it and it made him happy. I watched as much as I could back then, until I couldn’t anymore, but now i’ll say it’s okay, Jack always makes his gameplays fun and enjoyable so that’s why I watch his channel, plus he’s one of my favorite people to watch, I love his video’s they’re very entertaining!!

If you’re into Minecraft and you want to check out Jack’s gameplay of it, I will leave it here for you guys: Jacksepticeye (Minecraft Gameplay)

Well there you have it,

We now have reached the end of this post, this was actually pretty fun, i’m not going to lie, I enjoyed writing about my favorite things at the moment, it’s something new and different, didn’t expect to write so much about the book i’m reading, but I did which is insane, but hey if you enjoy something why not talk highly about it right!? Plus AJ, she’s the best we all know that……okay maybe it’s just me on that boat, but with all of that seeing as though this is very long, I won’t keep you anymore than I already have, I hope you enjoyed this post, I felt it to be a good distraction.

P.S. I wrote this all last night, but wanted to add photo’s to it so that’s why it’s being posted today, so Sunday’s post is now Monday’s post.

What are some of your favorite things at the moment!?

Let’s Talk Shows: Degrassi All Generations (June 26, 2019)

“Whatever It Takes, I Know I Can Make It Through”

These are the words and lyrics to one of the famous shows loved by many, the show people can’t seem to get enough of and the show people want back, that show ladies and gentlemen is Degrassi!!

Starting the journey with The Kids of Degrassi Street we watched and witness the growth of teens transitioning into Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High, introduced and welcomed the newer and Next Generation of the Next Class, following them through the highs and lows of their lives while also getting to know each and every character individually.

Some relatable and some not as much, but each one held a story that made an impact most of us would remember. Stories like Joey and Caitlin’s relationship, Spike’s (Christine) pregnancy, Jimmy’s changing life experience, the life of J.T. Yorke and so many other moments and memories from all the generations.

It’s crazy to see just how much this series has grown and expanded over the years with it originally premiering back in the late 70’s with the Kids of Degrassi Street, continuing on up until 2017 with Degrassi Next Class.

Being able to watch all these different generations from the show and seeing how different or similar some of the characters are from the previous timelines of Degrassi is incredible!!

Not only that, but the storylines from the series and the way they were able to restyle some of the topics that were expressed back in the late 70’s, 80’s and even early 90’s, to then bring them front and center for real life generations of this decade, is something worth admiring.

In the times where these topics were building, not many people felt comfortable speaking upon these topics because of how real and sensitive they were, so for the creators and writers of Degrassi to create an environment within a show that tackles, things like:

Teen pregnancy, drugs, mental disorders, self harm, different kinds of abuse and even tough situations like suicide as well as situations dealing with certain disabilities is quite fascinating because it wasn’t something that was seen often.

Now if you couldn’t already tell, just by everything i’ve stated, i’ve been pretty interested in all thing Degrassi lately and when I say interested I mean obsessed, i’m not ashamed to admit it, what can I say it’s a good show, that you can’t help, but get invested in.

Whenever I watch an episodes of Degrassi, I have this thing where I like to read the comment section and one of the comments had someone saying how even though Degrassi was very popular in Canada (Canada being it’s home place) over here in the states it was pretty much like a rare gem, because we didn’t really get or have shows like Degrassi, the formula it had to it and everything about it was just……

Let’s just say it’s hard to put into words……it was just different, different in a good way, it was that kind of show that coming across it, you’d be really curious to what it was about and you couldn’t help, but be drawn to it in some way, it’s just a really well put together kind of show.

You could tell just how dedicated the writers and everyone was with this show or series shall I say and how much it meant to them. You can always pick up on that kind of thing, even if shows like Degrassi aren’t really your thing, it’s nice knowing you can still appreciate everything about it!!

Watching every episode of it so far has been pretty intense firstly, but also very interesting and entertaining as well……the intense are of course the episodes and how they’re laid out and the interesting is everything else, with the different styles all the characters had to them, Spike with her famous hair, Joey and his fedora and Hawaiian shirts, all the different personalities from all the generations, just everything!!!

The 70’s and 80’s of Degrassi High and Junior High have more of a darker tone to it compared to The New Generation and New Class, however with New Generation and New Class, you also get those serious topics that you would from Degrassi High and Junior High, just in different ways of course.

When it come to The Kids of Degrassi Street however, well they start you off with the basics of when you’re a kid, some examples: A new family moves to town, a friend moves away, having crushes stuff like that…..Kids of Degrassi Street also tackle serious topics, but it’s not as full forced as it would be with the other versions of the show, which in a way is a good thing, because it would be really odd if it was like the other versions.

I always found decades like the 70s, 80’s and 90’s so fascinating……when you look back to those time whether you were apart of it or you just learned about it, you’ll notice a lot of different things from those decades compared to now, that you don’t really see much of anymore.

For example: The choice of clothing everyone wore, you’ll notice how comfortable, yet unique they were, which I love by the way!! Then you have the different sayings, such as Broomhead (which is another way to call someone an idiot) however I think it was in the show where that saying was used a lot…..not really sure if that was a popular saying back then……

Side Note: I noticed in the show that the word alright was used a lot, but I know that has nothing to do with the 80’s, just felt like pointing that out.

Compared to the different styles of today though and the different sayings and slangs they used, you’ll realize just how much everything’s evolved from within the time span of those times…….it’s just mad how much it’s changed since then!! I always wondered what it’d be like to experience the 80’s and 70’s and that in certain ways, with having to wear the kind of clothes they wore, speaking the way they did, even the school dances……

I know that’s random, but seriously what was that like!? The hairstyles they’d have too…..it’s just interesting to think about you know!?

I was born mid 90’s, but I didn’t really get to embrace the 90’s like how most people did, I know the fashion choices were pretty out of this world though, but other than that, didn’t really get to embrace it properly. I did get to experience part of the 80’s once…….that was something……sorry i’m getting a little lost in the nostalgia of decades that I haven’t really experienced.

The closes i’d say to me experiencing decades like the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s is the music really, I love old music……speaking of music, how about we talk more on Degrassi a bit, specifically it’s theme songs, both Degrassi High and Junior High’s theme were quite something, in the best way of course!!

At times at least……it’s actually pretty funny when you think about, because ahhh man was it both great and not at the same time……when you watch those old episodes of Degrassi High and Junior High, you’ll notice just how upbeat and peppy the theme was, I mean you have this very serious show that is Degrassi right and you would think because of the way the show is, the theme would fit with it……NOPE not at all, it’s really odd……

Knowing the kind of show Degrassi is and going back and hearing the theme that it had at one point and how joyful it was, you would think you were watching a whole different show until it starts.

There’s so many different moments in certain episodes where it’s extremely sad and very serious and you get to the ending of them, thinking the theme would stay put and not be heard for that specific episode……yet it plays anyway and you find yourself listening to a very cheerful Degrassi theme, while saying to yourself, “I don’t think that was the best way to end the episode or the episode could’ve done without the cheerful music at the end”

It was great though, I loved it, but it just came in so awkward at times……at least it was very catchy and let’s not forget they did bring us a new and improved Degrassi theme, now we can sit back in nostalgia and relive all the amazing Degrassi themes, how lucky are we!?

We even get to relive that famous bonus track by The Zit Remedy (a.k.a The Zits for a short while, until they went back to their original band name)

Final Thoughts: Now at season 3 of Degrassi: The Next Generation, I gotta say I don’t really know what made me want to watch the older versions from back then, but i’m glad I did look into them, because not only was it nice watching all those versions, but it gives you this whole yearbook on how the show came together, having everything make so much more sense compared to if you just watched it from Next Generation or New Class…..

Going back and looking to where it all first began, you then get bits and pieces added to the rest of the Degrassi series where you get to know all about the previous characters and what they were like and how they did things and just so much more and I think that’s great!! Watching the episodes now and seeing characters like Spike, Snake, Joey, Caitlin, Mr Raditch and others from the Degrassi High and Junior High series……

Seeing how they are now in Next Generation, is both crazy and pretty cool at the same time!! You’ve watched them as one personality for so long and then you see what they’re like older and it’s like, you can’t believe it……some you can see have stayed the same in some ways and there’s others who have changed a bit, but still have a bit of that personality that they did back in Junior High and Degrassi High and it’s just mad!!

I love how looking back at those series you can think to yourself “ahhh so that’s how that happen, I get it now” it makes you feel like you’re apart of it and shows like that stay memorable.

Now Playing: Weight By Alexz Johnson

Last weekend, I decided to give some stuff a listen…..some of my favorite artists came out with some music recently that I hadn’t heard yet and since it’s been a while, I thought i’d check out one of their songs.

The song that i’ll be discussing today is called Weight and it’s by one of my all time favorites artists Alexz Johnson, Weight came out two weeks ago well sorta……the song technically came out a few years ago, but only recently officially released this year (try saying that line 5 times ha)

I knew about the song, but I had never heard it before until recently, although it’s the same song that she wrote all those years ago…….she did make a couple of changes to it, so even though it’s the same, it’s also pretty different at the same time.

Now before you even say it, I know a lot of you won’t know who she is and that’s because she’s not really popularly well known…..she’s an independent artist, a Canadian American artist, she’s also an actress, she’s been in a few shows as well as some movies that you might’ve seen or heard about, but this could also be the first time you’ve ever heard about them too.

You might know her from the movie Final Destination 3 or you might’ve seen her on her popular (well i’d like to think of it as popular) show called Instant Star (one of my all time favorite shows might I add) it was featured on then network The N (now known as TeenNick) along with shows like Degrassi (The Next Generation) Radio Free Roscoe and a few other ones.

You should definitely check out Instant Star, it’s a good one and i’m not just saying that because it’s my favorite show…….alright I am a little, but it’s a really good show and I think some of you might enjoy it, feel free to check out the other shows and movies too.

Although she is an actress, she mainly focuses on her music the most and believe me when I tell you she’s amazing!! I actually had the pleasure of meeting her not once, but twice when I attended two different live shows of hers, the first time was back in 2013 and the second meet was about 2 years ago in 2017, both times were great getting to meet her, she’s a lovely human being, down to earth, good sense of humor and just all around great!!

Without further ado, let’s get to this song of hers shall we!? Now I could go on and review it, as well as interpret the song, but in all honesty i’ve never once thought to review an Alexz Johnson song and i’ve never felt the need to try to interpret her songs before either, I always felt they spoke for themselves when listening to them.

I mean who knows maybe one day i’ll sit down and try to break down the lyrics to her songs, but for now we’re just going to talk about it, in the best way that I can explain it. Before I listened to Weight, I gotta be honest, I was nervous……not like bad nervous, more on the excited side of town, I wasn’t sure what to expect of it and that’s why I was nervous about it.

For those of you who don’t know, Alexz last album A Stranger Time, released almost 2 years ago (it’ll be 2 years come this September) and so it’s been a while since hearing anything new from her…….when I found out about Weight, I was caught off guard, I didn’t even know she was writing new stuff. It wasn’t until I went on one of my social medias to see her counting down to the release of the song to know about it, although I didn’t hear it on the release day, I was still buzzing to hear it!!

When I actually heard the song I thought i’d be a little calm listening to it, but the minute I hit the play button and heard her voice, I stopped it immediately……..I needed to get myself in order first before continuing on with the song, well I tried to continue on listening in a calmly fashion, it didn’t quite work out that way though…….I mean I was semi calm, but had some enthusiasm added to that calmness, but tell me how else do you react when one of your favorite artists releases a new song unexpectedly!?

Exactly, you react accordingly and by accordingly I mean how ever you feel that emotion to be during the moment and that was mine in the moment.

I also had the biggest smile on my face when listening to the song, even though I had no idea how I was going to write about it, once it had finished. Alexz never disappoints me with her music, even if there’s a song that i’m not too fond of, i’m still not disappointed with it……her music is just incredible and I think she’s uniquely wonderful!!

With that said, I don’t know if this will sound weird, but the way she speaks is the way she sings, that might sound confusing so i’ll try and explain, you know when you’re listening to an artist and you hear them talk and from the way they speak you wouldn’t think that their singing voice would be any different, but then you hear them sing something and you’re like “That voice did not just come out of you!? No way I would’ve never guessed!!”

That’s what I mean, but with Alexz, her voice is both so simple, yet so outstandingly out of this world at the same time, the power she has with it and the way she uses it with her music…….I love it!! She’s just really amazing, I got chills listening to her hit a high note towards the bridge of the song, that’s how good she is!!

Also yes I know anyone can give you chills with their singing, but there’s always that special one that is very different from the rest and gives you that special kind of feeling and Alexz is one of those people to me.

Whether it’s with her voice, her writing style, just everything, she’s just really incredible all around and with this song, well with any Alexz Johnson song really, in my opinion anyway, you can’t help, but want to listen to it and really take everything in that you’re listening to…….be it because of the lyrics or her voice, she leaves you without words and just makes you feel you know!?

I played the song more than once within the same night, so I can say I know a pretty good amount of the chorus now and other parts to the song too.

Now there’s other versions to the song Weight performed by Alexz Johnson herself of course, where she sings it in different ways, adding different things to it as well. In the original her voice is a little younger, but not too young, my first thought about it was that it sounded like a song that would’ve fit very well on her show Instant Star…..

Well the original one would’ve i’d say probably between the 3rd-4th season, but had there been a 5th season I think the newer version would go well, if you listen to it and you know the show you’d think so too.

In the original you’ll also hear a xylophone in the background, there’s other versions where you’ll still hear it, but there will be a few tweaks to it here and there each time you listen to it with the way her singing style is, the different instruments added to it and just the different transformations it went through to be what it is now.

The lyrics to the song changes a little as well and the arrangement of the song sorta changes too, there’s a lot of different changes you’ll notice when listening to it…….In the new version of what Weight came to be, the first thing you’ll notice is that the Xylophone was removed from the song completely, i’m not sure why though, I personally thought it gave the song some character and was quite nice in the background…..

However I could also understand why maybe she felt the need to remove it…….she might’ve thought at that time it went well with it, but once she re listened to it, she thought to herself “it’s good, but it could be better”or she most likely felt a recreation to it would do it a lot more justice.

That’s probably why we have all these different versions of it, maybe throughout the process of wanting to release the song in someway, she was trying to work out the right sound for it…..it took a decade for this song to be released officially and i’m sure now that we’ve got it, Alexz is very proud with the way it turned out, plus she got to release it her way and i’m pretty sure that’s a bonus in her book.

The sound and feel that Weight has to it now, I believe, that was the sound we were meant to hear, even though we’ve already heard the original version to it, what it turned out to be was what we were supposed to get from it and what we got turned out to be quite amazing, now we can listen to it as freely as we like without any worries!!

Final Thoughts: If you were to ask me whether I prefer the Original or the newer version of Weight, i’d say although I really did like the Xylophone in the background of the original…….

I would say the newer version of Weight takes the cake!! I really like the arrangement of the song and the style she chose to sing with this version, I think you feel the song more and I feel it’s actually quite better this way, because you get to hear the growth to it each time you listen to it from the other versions and then to this one and I think that’s great!! It’s like you’re walking through the process of it and getting to see the progress and journey of it as well and that’s something you don’t see nor hear too often.

I really do admire Alexz Johnson, i’ve been a fan of hers since her Instant Star days and have kept up with her since then and i’m just real glad to be a fan of hers and to be able to get to listen to these incredible songs that she creates, I can’t wait to hear what else she’s got coming along!! I’m sure it’s going to be something and I mean that in the best way possible.

If you haven’t heard any of her songs I would highly recommend giving them a listen, I don’t normally share her music with people because she’s a special one to me, but i’ll add you guys as an exception haha……

If you guys are interested in giving both versions a listen i’ll leave it for you, feel free to share your thoughts on the song and let me know which version you prefer!!
